We were thrilled to celebrate the unveiling of Ola Volo’s unique mural, The Spirit of Assembly, in the Assembly mews on September 10, 2024.
Assembly offered an exciting canvas for creativity within the ground level mews, a corridor weaving through the commercial spaces of the project and an open-air courtyard with access to the residences. To honor the creativity of Strathcona and offer a visually stimulating experience for all, fabric living and Hudson Projects voluntarily commissioned Ola Volo (BFA, Emily Carr University), a Canadian Mural artist and illustrator from Kazakhstan with a distinctive style drawn from folklore, multiculturalism and identity to create an original mural designed to help inspire and connect Assembly’s residents, businesses and visitors.
Ola’s artwork brings the ceiling of the mews to life with intricate storytelling. Elements of culture, people and local activities help to capture the essence of Assembly, Strathcona and Vancouver. From the local mountains to the Culture Crawl crow and harbour seals, this unique piece includes fun narratives that acknowledge the subtleties of human nature while celebrating the little surprises of everyday life in Strathcona.
Ola’s artwork is internationally recognized for its inventiveness and unique stories; every character is full of spirited personality and inhabits a dynamic environment. Assembly is proud to be home to such a creative piece and we encourage all to visit. When you are there, be sure to look up and take it all in!
